Yesterday we explored the North Shore of Kauai. We drove until the very end of the Kuhio Highway, which stops at the northwest tip of the island. There’s no highway running the west side of the island, which seems to be typical of the Hawaiian islands, i.e. Maui and parts of the Big Island.
Oh, before I show you pictures, I want to show you what we left when we left Oregon. Janelle took this picture as she was driving into our driveway the day we left. We used to call this a silver thaw, but they’re now calling it freezing fog. In any case, it’s damn cold!

Okay, back to Kauai! There are several interesting landmarks on the highway going to the northshore, and lots of beaches. The first beach we stopped to take a picture of is the beach where Mitzi Gaynor “washed that man right out of her hair” in the movie South Pacific. We took a shot from above it on the highway–not sure how to get down there:

Hanalei has a beautiful bay and also a canyon where most of the island’s taro (used to make poi) is grown. Here’s the taro fields in the canyon–they look like rice paddies:

Here are two more shots that show the size of the canyon–the view is really magnificent!

Jurassic Park was filmed on this island. At the very top of the northshore and right off the highway, we saw a large cave. Here’s a shot we took coming out of the cave–reminded me of the movie–in fact, the entire mountain side of the northshore was probably where the movie was filmed–it’s jungle.

We ate lunch at the best restaurant! It’s Sammy’s Barbeque in Kapa’a, the town where we’re staying. It’s a tiered restaurant–every seat has a great view and it all open air. We were right at the bottom and had the best view ever:

Then when we came home, we were sitting in our living room and Rick said “Look!” and here’s what we saw:

Another day in paradise ended!
